Patrick Cook, lyricist

Pat and Rick are moderators of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York, where Patrick is also Senior Director of Musical Theatre and Jazz at BMI. Their musical Captains Courageous was developed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, produced at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. (where it was directed by Graciela Daniele), and then produced off-Broadway by the Manhattan Theatre Club, where it was directed by Lynne Meadow. Captains Courageous was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. 

 

Their adaptation of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was commissioned by Ford’s Theatre and won an NEA development grant.

 

Patrick worked for many years in his early career as an actor, appearing on Broadway in A Mother’s Kisses with Beatrice Arthur, in the National Tour of 1776, and Off-Broadway in Dark of the Moon and Early Morning. Pat was the 2001 recipient of the Ed Kleban award for outstanding lyrics. He lives in Manhattan with his wife Amy.

 

Rick was born in Yonkers, New York, and graduated from Harvard University. Aside from writing music, Rick has co-moderated the First and Second Year classes at the BMI Workshop since 2001, where he has advised and guided a generation of up-and-coming musical theatre talent, crafting rich and diverse educational material on the various genres of music that influenced the current crop of Broadway talent. He lives in Westchester with his wife Jaye.
